ELN: CBS debuts their ‘black-ish’-esque hour with ‘#TheNeighborhood’ & ‘#HappyTogether’ #falltv

Monday night saw two more additions to the weekly TV schedule. Not necessarily mine, but some network loyalists who enjoy this connect-the-dots humor. At first glance I had my doubts on the success of The Neighborhood, but I gave it a go off the strength of Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold. Unfortunately I should have gone with my gut instinct.

The loose gentrifying tale sees Cedric and Tichina’s black suburb invaded by Max Greenfield and Beth Byers. What ensuses is a not-so-funny parade of comedic flexes with no stretch of imagination. I wonder if this concept would have been more convincing if the elder black couple faced friction with a younger, black millennial family. Shouts to Jerrod Carmichael. Personally Cedric has done better – The Last O.G. is a perfect example.  And Arnold has paid her dues on Everybody HAtes Chris and Survivor’s Remorse.

The second show, Happy Together, fared a bit better. When a 30-something couple’s sedantary lives are stirred by the arrival of a famous house guest, things get … silly? What sounded more potent for a film script, Happy did evoke some laughs. Mainly because of Wayans genetically wrought talent. And the arrival of Stephanie Weir and Victor Williams as Wayans in-laws was a pleasant surprise.

If I return to either of these shows – it will be the latter. But I can’t make any promises. Too much TV to be wasted on bad shows these days.
