Robert Eggers, director of 2016’s highly praised thriller The Witch, is back to terrify again. This time he’s enlisted Willem Defoe and Robert Pattinson as caretakers of a lighthouse. The trailer doesn’t give the us much information other than the film is shot in black and white. We do get see Defoe and Pattison converse, sing, drink, engage in a fight with what looked like a giant octopus, swing axes, and question just how long they’ve been on the isolated piece of land watching the lighthouse. Make of that what you will. The Lighthouse hits theaters on the 18th of October.
I am starting to become an obsessive fan of the production company A24. Everything they touch turns to gold. The Lighthouse looks like it will be no different. Willem Defoe has had a long and storied career in Hollywood, and he’s managed to find a balance between indie films and blockbusters that suit him best. Robert Pattinson seems to be on the same path. Most will know him from his roles in the Twilight and Harry Potter films, but in the last few years he’s ventured more into indie films with the likes of 2017’s Good Times, and 2018’s High Life. The Lighthouse looks set to contend for the title of 2019’s best film.
