How does one top the highest-grossing film of all-time? You don’t. And it’s perfectly fine. Instead The Russo Brothers of Avengers: Endgame fame followed the Marvel comics blockbuster by producing the action-packed Netflix streamer Extraction.
Starring Asgard’s own Chris Hemsworth, Extraction takes place inside the crime syndicate of India. When a drug dealer’s son (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) is taken as ransom, Hemsworth’s merc is hired to return the precious cargo. But the pair soon find themselves going when the mission goes awry.
While the story itself is a bit predictable — think Man on Fire — the film is carried by the excellent, yet brutal action sequences. Picture John Wick in fatigues. Tight gun battles, quick melee and crazy camera work kept me on the edge of my seat. The stunt work can be attributed to the film’s director – stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave.
Apart from the main draw, there is a grander arc of loneliness and loss. Both Hemsworth and Jaiswal exhibit this connection in the quieter moments. But I think it is best displayed in a supporting character’s arc. Randeep Hooda is Saju, the second-in-command tasked with retrieving his boss’ son. His desperation was more believable than Hemsoworth’s depressive state. I could have seen him as the lead, fighting both corrupt police and nefarious thugs to retrieve the child.
Overall the film was a fun ride on a Friday night.
